Drop-off authorization: convenient or a risk?

It sounds ideal: you’re on the road or not at home and the courier just “leaves your package somewhere.” Behind the house, by the shed, in the front garden, or with the neighbors.
Many carriers call this drop-off authorization. But what you need to know: by doing this, you’re actually giving up a significant amount of security.

In this blog, we’ll explain simply what it is, why it’s offered, and why we at Truckned advise you to think carefully about it.

What exactly is drop-off authorization?

With delivery services such as DHL, DPD, or PostNL, you can often indicate that your package may be delivered without a signature or your presence. That is called drop-off authorization.

The courier is then allowed to, for example:

Very convenient, especially if you’re on the road a lot or don’t have a fixed home base.

But there is an important downside to it.

Who is responsible if things go wrong?

As soon as you give drop-off authorization, the responsibility shifts entirely to you as the recipient.

In practice, this means:

The carrier can prove that the package was delivered according to your instructions. This means they (and often the webshop too) are no longer liable.

In short: the package is “delivered” on paper, and with that, the courier’s responsibility ends.

What does this mean for you as a customer?

We totally get it: if you’re on the road a lot with the truck or have varying working hours, convenience is very attractive. Having it dropped off quickly seems ideal.

But in practice, we also see that this regularly goes wrong. And then there’s often no way back.

That’s why our advice at Truckned is:
Better not to use drop-off authorization.

Instead, choose:

This way your package remains insured, traceable, and you avoid hassle afterwards.

“But the courier offers it themselves, right?”

Correct. Carriers make it easy to choose this option because it makes their work faster.

What they don’t tell you as clearly:
as soon as you give your consent, the risk lies entirely with you.

A claim can then no longer be submitted to the carrier if something goes wrong. That is exactly why we are so clear about this.
